Mixed Media Construction by Veronica Vazquez @ Piero Atchugarry Gallery
Over the past couple of years, the National Museum of Visual Arts (MNAV) in Montevideo has presented numerous solo exhibitions featuring works by internationally-renowned Uruguayan artists who rely upon alternative materials utilized in distinct processes that harken special relationships between the past, present, and future. Presented here is the work of Uruguayan Veronica Vazquez whose MNAV 2016 exhibition cemented her place in the forefront of the Southern Cone contemporary art circuit.
Veronica Vazquez (Treinta y Tres, Uruguay, 1970) extends the long lineage and continued journey of 20th and 21st century Uruguay artists who’ve been utilizing objects, found or sought, to construct intricate compositions since the early days of the Torres-Garcia Southern School. Alternative materials including trashed metal, carton, fabrics and wire are freed from traditional preconceptions and repurposed into subtle yet stunning contemporary sculptures and installations.

Many works explore spatial relationships and the role of an artwork’s presence in a specifically-defined physical context, as found in works of Richard Serra, one major influence of Vazquez. Other works represent a nostalgic nod to the artist’s life of adapting pliable physical objects to create aesthetic values based on her previous learning experiences and memories, be they sewing, pottery or metal work. Never lost in the work of Veronica Vazquez are the nod to nature, organic tactility and muted southern palettes which in themselves have evolved into telltale characteristics of Southern Cone modern and contemporary art over the past hundred years.

Vazquez’s work retains a respectful connection to the past while serving as a progressive conduit to consider, identify and understand the pillars of South America’s particular visual language that dates back to the constructions of JTG and his students. She continues to discover new symbolic markers to express it through space, form and contemplation. In so doing, Veronica Vazquez expands a vibrant, thought-provoking regional conversation that has flourished for over a century.
